“Sobriety is more than not using – it is creating a new life that supports it.”
A substance use disorder is a medical illness characterized by clinically significant impairments in health, social function, and voluntary control over substance use.
To define simply, substance abuse is a pattern of harmful use of any substance for mood-altering purposes. “Substances” can include alcohol and other drugs (illegal or not) as well as some substances that are not drugs at all. Abuse” can result because you are using a substance in a way that is not intended or recommended, or because you are using more than prescribed
Millions of people die every year due to substance abuse.
When To Come In For Substance Abuse Counselling
Substance use crosses the line into substance abuse if the repeated use causes significant impairment, such as:
- Disabilities
- Failure to meet responsibilities
- Health issues
- Impaired control
- Risky use
- Social issues
If you meet 3 of the 6 qualities, your substance use is probably at the abuse level and you need to seek support.
For those with mild to moderate substance use disorders, treatment through the general health care system may be sufficient, while those with severe substance use disorders (addiction) may require specialty treatment.
