How Many Therapy Sessions Will I Need?

It is one of the first questions people ask, and the honest answer is: it depends. But “it depends” is not very useful, so here is what it depends on.

At Trijog, you and your therapist review progress together and decide on next steps, rather than committing to a fixed number upfront.

The short answer

There is no fixed number of therapy sessions. Some people find a few sessions enough for one focused problem, while longer-standing or more complex difficulties usually take longer. It depends on what you are working on, how long it has been going on, your goals and how often you meet. A good therapist reviews progress with you regularly and agrees together when to continue or stop.

What affects how long therapy takes

01

What you are working on, and how long it has been going on

02

Whether there is one clear problem or several linked ones

03

Your goals for therapy

04

How often you meet and practise between sessions

05

What else is happening in your life

Focused work versus longer work

Some approaches, such as cognitive behavioural therapy for a specific fear, are structured and time-limited. Other work, such as understanding long-standing relationship patterns or the effects of childhood experiences, tends to take longer.

Reviewing progress

Every so often, your therapist will check in with you: what has changed, what has not, and whether to continue, change approach or take a break. You can ask for this review at any time.

Knowing when to stop

You might be ready to stop when the problem that brought you in feels manageable, you have tools to handle setbacks, and you feel confident on your own. Many people taper off gradually and know they can come back if they need to.
