How to Find the Right Therapist in Mumbai

Finding a therapist can feel like a task in itself, especially when you are already tired. This guide breaks it into simple steps.

It is written by Trijog, a Mumbai mental health organisation, but the advice applies wherever you look for help.

The short answer

To find a good therapist in Mumbai: decide what you need help with, check the therapist’s qualifications and registration (clinical psychologists in India register with the RCI), ask how they work with concerns like yours, consider practical factors such as location, timings and online options, and judge the first one or two sessions by whether you feel heard. Changing therapists if the fit is wrong is normal.

Step 1: Know roughly what you want help with

You do not need a diagnosis. Something like “I cannot stop worrying,” “my marriage is struggling” or “I have felt low since my father died” is enough to find the right kind of help.

Step 2: Check qualifications

Look for a recognised qualification in psychology or counselling. Clinical psychologists in India register with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Psychiatrists are medical doctors registered with a medical council.

Step 3: Ask the right questions

01

Have you worked with concerns like mine before?

02

How do you usually work, and what would sessions involve?

03

How do you handle confidentiality?

04

Do you offer online sessions?

05

What happens if I need medicine or more support?

Step 4: Think about practical fit

In Mumbai, travel time matters. A therapist close to home or work, or one who offers online sessions, makes it much easier to keep going. Check timings too: early-morning and late-evening slots help if you work long hours.

Step 5: Judge the first sessions

After a session or two, ask yourself whether you felt heard, respected and not judged. You do not need to feel better immediately, but you should feel the conversation is going somewhere.
