Psychologist vs Psychiatrist vs Counsellor: Who Should You See?

Three titles, often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and knowing the difference helps you go to the right person first.

Here is a plain explanation of what each one does in India, with examples of when to see whom.

The short answer

In India, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MBBS plus MD in psychiatry) who diagnoses mental health conditions and can prescribe medicine. A psychologist has postgraduate training in psychology and provides assessment and talking therapy; clinical psychologists register with the RCI. A counsellor supports people through everyday problems and life changes using talking approaches. Many people start with a psychologist or counsellor, who can refer to a psychiatrist if medicine is worth discussing.

Psychiatrist

A medical doctor who specialises in mental health. Psychiatrists diagnose conditions, prescribe and monitor medicine, and manage more severe or complex illness. Some also provide therapy.

So who should you see first?

If you are not sure, start with a psychologist or counsellor. They can help you understand what is going on and refer you to a psychiatrist if medicine might help. If you have severe symptoms, such as not being able to function, hearing things others do not, or thoughts of ending your life, see a psychiatrist or go to a hospital emergency.
